Talking About Nuclear Weapons with the American Public
In the summer of 2009, the U.S. in the World Initiative was asked to synthesize, analyze and develop messaging recommendations based on three recent research projects that examined public opinion on nuclear weapons issues: one each conducted by the Topos Partnership (done on behalf of the Union of Concerned Scientists), American Environics, and Greenberg, Quinlan and Rosner. Based on this research, in November of 2009 USITW released a report titled Talking About Nuclear Weapons With the Persuadable Middle. This report presents advocates working in favor of the reduction and eventual elimination of the U.S. nuclear arsenal with fact based conclusions on how the public perceives this issue, and tips on how they should frame their conversations if they want to engage the persuadable middle of the electorate on the subject. Since the report’s release USITW has presented the findings on multiple occasions to leaders in the non-proliferation community, and has provided guidance about how tangible progress can be achieved.
